Meet the TJF Board:
Paul Cummings
Festival Director / Brains Behind
It’s about TIME! After 27 years of teaching, travelling and organizing festivals, Paul has started his own event, centred on one of his true loves, Jazz! There were many years of planning, posturing and procrastinating, but legitimate planning finally began in June of 2017… thanks to the encouragement of family, friends and students. Paul has woven together his favourite ideas, garnered from both his teaching experience and professional jazz festivals from around the world, and, together with a great team, has transplanted his vision to Powell River. It is with great passion, inspiration, and love of Jazz that he and his wonderful team brings the Townsite Jazz Festival to life.
Jan Burnikell
Secretary
I love all kinds of music and I love how music pulls people together on so many levels. Over all the years I’ve lived in Powell River, I have seen how a creative and focused festival, done well, strengthens and builds joyful community, and I’m very happy to contribute time and energy to this one. There have been - and are - many outstanding teachers of music in this town and it is very fitting that the Townsite Jazz Festival celebrates and builds on that wonderful history, in this historically deeply-rooted place.
Nikki Hilleren
Treasurer
I am fairly new to the Powell River area and I have always had an appreciation for the arts with an eclectic taste in music. The Townsite Jazz Festival is a perfect way for me to be part of the creative process and a way to give back to the community.
Ron Campbell
Board Member
A professional musician since 1966, Ron is primarily a guitarist/vocalist, though he also plays bass, keyboards, drums and harmonica. His main interest is Blues music, but he loves and plays Jazz too. He has released six CDs, and his songs have been used in film and theatre productions. He has shared the stage with many fine Canadian musicians, such as Steve Briggs, Walter Martella, and Louise Rose. Ron gigs steadily with several different bands in Powell River, and is a faculty instructor at the Powell River Academy of Music. As an avid supporter of the local music scene, he is proud and excited to be part of the Townsite Jazz Festival.
